There are no teeth better than your natural teeth, but sometimes, repair work is needed. Here at New Era Dentistry, we not only take a minimally-invasive approach to conserve as much natural tooth structure as possible; we take a biomimetic approach, as well.
Taken literally, “biomimetic” means imitating life. So the goal in biomimetic dentistry is to restore damaged or diseased teeth in a way that returns them to their original look, strength, and function.
This is a step ahead of traditional dentistry, which focuses largely on aesthetics and is less concerned with the biomechanics of the teeth being restored.
Yet when biomechanics are ignored, the result is often a succession of restorative work ultimately leading to the death of the tooth and a referral for root canal therapy in hopes of “saving” it.
In biomimetic dentistry, on the other hand, we aim to return the dental tissues to full function through a hard tissue bond, using stress-reduced direct composites (white fillings) or indirect composite or ceramic inlays or onlays. Not only does this allow us to save more natural tooth structure, but it allows pressure (functional stress) to pass through the tooth – just as it would in a 100% natural tooth.
For your teeth are more than just chompers or elements of a beautiful smile. They’re living sensory organs. Biomimetic dentistry respects that and strives to replicate it.
We believe this is a healthier way to do dentistry – and makes for happier patients, too!
